Benefits and Process for Registering Your Van as a ‘Motor Caravan’ with the DVLA

How to Register Your Van as a Motor Caravan with the DVLA

If you’re converting your van into a camper, planning to register it as a motor caravan from the outset can save you a lot of hassle. Although re-registering your converted van with the DVLA as a ‘motor caravan’ isn’t mandatory, doing so brings significant advantages.

Benefits of Registering Your Van as a Motor Caravan:

  • Lower Insurance Premiums: Campervans typically incur fewer claims, lower annual mileage, and non-commercial use, making insurance premiums 10%-50% cheaper compared to standard vans.
  • Better Contents Insurance: Campervan policies usually offer enhanced coverage for personal belongings like electronics, essential for protecting valuables on your adventures.
  • Reduced MOT Costs: Class 7 vehicles (3,000kg – 3,500kg) registered as campervans benefit from cheaper and less stringent Class 4 MOT regulations.
  • Higher Speed Limits: If your vehicle is under 3,050kg, registering as a motor caravan allows speeds up to 70mph on dual carriageways, compared to the standard 60mph limit for panel vans. Note that vehicles above 3,050kg won’t experience speed limit changes.
  • Cheaper Ferry Prices: Most ferry operators offer lower fares for campervans compared to commercial vans. However, some may verify your DVLA logbook classification before offering discounted rates.

DVLA Compliance Requirements for Motor Caravan Registration:

To qualify as a motor caravan, your van must meet specific criteria defined by the DVLA. Always verify the latest guidelines on the DVLA Website. At the time of writing, the DVLA requires you to clearly demonstrate the following features in your application: Clearly illustrate these required features in annotated photos and describe them in your DVLA covering letter:

  • Windows: At least two windows must be fitted on one side of the main body, excluding driver and passenger door windows.
  • Dedicated Access Door: A separate entrance to the living area is required, and any window in this door can count toward the window requirement.
  • Exterior Features: Your van must have motorhome-style graphics on both sides, an awning bar, and a permanent high-top roof (pop-top roofs are not accepted).
  • Interior Features: The following features must be permanently installed:
    • Seating and Dining Area: Seating and a table arrangement convertible to sleeping space.
    • Sleeping Arrangements: Integrated or convertible sleeping spaces.
    • Cooking Facilities: Permanently fitted cooking equipment.
    • Storage: Adequate, rigidly fixed storage spaces.

Example Covering Letter for DVLA:

“To Whom It May Concern,

We are submitting an application to reclassify our panel van as a motor caravan (motorhome), according to DVLA guidelines.

Vehicle Details:

  • Model: Peugeot Boxer LWB Panel Van
  • Modifications: Vehicle meets the DVLA motor caravan criteria

Key Features:

  • Windows: Two rear windows, three roof vents, two large side windows, and one small rear window (right-hand side).
  • Access Door: Separate entry door to the living area.
  • Exterior Graphics: Motor caravan-style graphics on both sides.

Motor Caravan Insurance:

Once reclassified, updating your insurance is essential. You’ll need to cancel your current panel van policy and obtain new coverage specifically designed for campervans. Using incorrect insurance could lead to denied claims, so ensure your vehicle classification aligns accurately with your insurance policy.
